Food Banks: Get Your States Involved in Food is Medicine - Food Bank News

This article urges food banks to get involved with their state leaders, "to get started in Food is Medicine, and to lobby their state food-bank leadership to get involved". Building an infrastructure as a state and working at a scale that supports Medicaid ensures success of Food is Medicine initiatives statewide. "The impact of state policy speaks to the importance of getting involved early in any conversations at the state level around Food is Medicine."

PERSPECTIVE – The Growing Global Benefits of Limiting Salt Intake: an urgent call from the World Hypertension League for more effective policy and public health initiatives | Journal of Human Hypertension

"Estimates from the INTERSALT study suggested that a 2300 mg higher daily sodium intake was associated with ~10 mmHg rise of SBP from 25 to 55 years of age. Clinical studies have indicated that the age-related increase of BP is largely confined to salt-sensitive individuals. Sixteen adults followed for 10 or more years after being defined as salt sensitive had a 1.4 mmHg/year increase in SBP or ~14 mmHg over 10 years, whereas SBP fell slightly over time in 15 salt-resistant individuals."

2021 USDA report finds 98% of farms are still family owned

"Family farms account for 96% of all U.S. farms, according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture Farm Typology report released last week by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). These farms – 1,789,439 small family farms, 108,304 mid-size family farms, and 52,592 large-scale family farms – collectively produced $318 billion worth of agricultural products in 2017."

"In this paper, the growing connection between Food is Medicine (FIM) and regenerative agriculture (RA) is explored, two movements reshaping food systems through complementary, multilevel actions across the food supply chain. The discussion centers on the role of produce prescription, medically tailored grocery (MTG), and medically tailored meal (MTM) programs, which provide patients with fresh produce and other healthy foods or meals through prescriptions issued by healthcare providers and organizations. While the primary focus is on regenerative agriculture, organic agriculture is also examined, highlighting key similarities and differences between the two."

"This background memo discusses the history of Title IV in farm bills, the programs offered in Title IV, and the major changes made in the 2018 Farm Bill. The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (2018 Farm Bill) is the most recent multi-year, omnibus piece of legislation governing food and agricultural programs. Title IV, Nutrition, is divided into three subtitles covering the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Commodity Distribution Programs, and Miscellaneous programs which includes the Farm-to-School Program, Seniors Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, and others."

This article highlights the growing shift in foods trends as concerns about environmental impacts rise. The article mentions 'Blue Foods' otherwise known as aquatic foods, and shares labeling trends. Although not FDA regulated terms, organizations focused on sustainability are adding climate labels to products with a focus on waste reduction. Increasing trends exist in the plant-based category and new meat alternatives are being marketed, along with a focus on culture and global flavors.

Partnering to Provide Digital-Driven Nutrition Services: Attane Health and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield - Center for Health Care Strategies

This article addresses the challenges Kentucky faces due to "limited access to affordable, nutritious foods, exacerbating conditions like diabetes". "To help address this challenge and in alignment with state goals, from April through September 2024, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (Anthem) partnered with Attane Health to implement a pilot program providing home-delivered groceries and tele-nutrition coaching to 66 Medicaid enrollees in the state with diabetes who are experiencing food insecurity. By supporting patient behavior changes, such as eating more fruits and vegetables and increased physical activity, the project sought to achieve better health outcomes."
